Honorable Mention
Refugees
Charles Levenstein

I have been traveling all night
through bitter landscape of ashen
trees and fields of salt. Flight
was our only choice, not passion

for mythic valleys with herds
of goats and honey blossoms.
No agitator’s eloquence
made my neighbors flotsam

in this awful sea of refugees.
We fled to save children’s shallow
breath, the only mystery
why so long believed the hollow

myth of Egypt’s air, the worth
of suffering labor and monuments:
slaves of birth and mind, perhaps
may survive desert sacraments.

And if the Red Sea parts and marks
a course, not guaranteed to save the day,
but with a future we can hope to shape,
trudge on, dream along the way.
